Summary: Elizabeth left behind letters for her friends....

John Sheppard was getting ready for bed when his computer dinged the noise that indicated an important email had just come in. It was unusual -- anything really important was called over the communicator, no one used the email for critical messages. He mostly used it for reports.... and to annoy Rodney from time to time. He grinned to himself.

"What the fuck...." he said at the computer screen. It was a message from Elizabeth. But that wasn't possible.... He had left her behind on the Asuran planet and there hadn't been time or resources to go looking for her yet. He would....

"Rodney?" he buzzed the scientist on the communicator.

"What? I'm working...." was the absent-minded reply.

"I have an email from Elizabeth," John told him.

"Rodney?" John asked again, softly.

John heard Rodney sigh. "I helped her set up a set of messages to be sent after.... well, after she left," Rodney admitted softly. "I set up the program for her but I didn't know who she had left messages for. Or what was in them."

"Oh. Well, then..... it's safe to open it?" John had to ask.

"Yeah, go ahead...." Rodney said.

"I'm gonna go......" John started.

"Okay.... talk to you later?" Rodney asked.

"Sure," John replied. "In the morning."

"'night," Rodney told him.

Taking the communicator off, John sat down to read the message.....

If you're reading this, something has happened. I'm gone unexpectedly and have been replaced as the head of the Expedition. Rodney helped me set this up.... but you'll already know that since you've already asked.... You did, didn't you?

I just wanted to say how proud I am to have known you. You were exactly the right person to be the head of military in Atlantis and I hope you get the chance to keep this job as long as you want it. If anyone else had been head of the military -- especially in that first year -- I don't think we would have made it. The fact that the Expedition is still a going operation is as much credit to you as it is to Rodney.

Yes, I did have to fight to keep you, that's not a secret. What I never was supposed to tell you was that General O'Neill was on your side from the very beginning. But since I don't know who has replaced me, you need to know you have at least one good friend at the SGC. Richard Woolsey also said nice things about you in his report to the IOC, so you can count on his support if you ever need it. I hope it never comes to that, but I have to be realistic. You shouldn't need to be good at politics to do your job well and my hope for you is that my successor can do that for you.

Thank you for being a friend, a colleague and willing to fight for things you thought were right. That was always important to me -- you were as frustrating as hell when you just knew you were right and thought I was wrong, or -- sometimes worse -- you listened to Rodney. The thing is, the Expedition and Atlantis always came first -- I could trust that you weren't doing it for yourself.

Now that I'm gone, this proves again that life is too short to not find that one special thing for yourself. Tell Rodney that he needs to tell you his 'big secret.' Yes, those are Rodney's air quotes... It's not my secret to tell, but tell Rodney I told him not to wait until it's too late. I'm telling him the same thing, but you'll have to be patient with him..... then again, you always are. Go to him tonight before he has a chance to think about it too much.

Take care of them all the best you can-- like you always do..... and thank you for being there always.

John had to breathe hard for a minute to gain his composure. It had been so hard to leave Elizabeth behind and he knew that looking for her too soon would be a risk to everyone else...... and damn, she was right... he was protecting everyone else before doing what he wanted.....

Rodney had a 'big secret'? Rodney wasn't all that good at keeping secrets so this had to be something especially special. He closed down the computer and went in search of Rodney.
