For slashtheimage Prompt #086
John eased the broken pencil into the desk drawer, knowing Rodney'd be back for it. Pencils were precious, as was anything made on Earth.
He went in search of his scientist.
He finally found Rodney in their room, sitting on their balcony.
"What's up?" John asked, settling down next to Rodney.
Rodney sighed. "Just... frustrated, I guess," Rodney said softly.
"What happened?" John probed.
Rodney lay his head back. "It was stupid," he admitted. "Wherever the pencil came from, someone had it in their mouth," he said. "The teeth marks were annoying in my grip... and then I started remembering."
"Remembering what?" John asked.
"Peter Grodin liked to use pencils, even more than markers on a white board," Rodney said. "Sometimes, he'd use a pencil down to a nub before he'd give up on it."
John leaned closer, sharing his warmth.
"And Gaul used to swipe them when he could and just chomp on them to leave teeth marks to annoy Peter," Rodney recounted. "Then Peter'd complain about germs but keep using it anyway."
Rodney was silent for a long while. "That seems eons ago."
"In many ways, it was," John admitted. "We just have to remember what we can."
"That's just it," Rodney said. "There's so much to remember. People we've lost, things we've just begun to learn, things we don't have time for because we're so busy just surviving."
Rodney's tone was slightly bitter.
John put an arm around Rodney's shoulders. "It's not easy, I know."
"It's fucking hard," Rodney said in a small voice.
"Are you sorry we survived?" John asked.
"No, not for a moment," Rodney said. "It's just that so many won't have..."
Jeannie... Madison... family went unsaid.
"I know," John said roughly and dropped a kiss on Rodney's temple.
John just held on tightly.
