Prompt: #17: Lighting the Menorah
Summary: Earth traditions were mystifying
There were finally enough people of Jewish faith on Atlantis that they had organized together and requested a Menorah in the common area, in addition to the Christmas tree. Woolsey didn't think twice about approving the request.
After the eight armed candelabrum had been set up, Ronon asked, "What's that?"
"A Menorah, a part of another of Earth's religions," Rodney explained. Teyla and Ronon had been more than somewhat mystified by the multiple religions, but had learned to accept that Earthers were odd in many unfathomable ways.
"What does it stand for?" Ronon looked at the golden device in curiosity.
"The Jewish religion honors the miracle where one day's worth of oil lit the temple lamps for eight days," Rodney explained. "It gave them time to prepare a new supply of oil."
"Sounds like an Ancient had their hand in that one," John commented.
Rodney shrugged, "I'll be sure to ask the next time we run into one."
"It is a lovely story," Teyla commented. "Sarah Levinstein told the story to the children."
Ronon looked at the Menorah. "Well, that makes a hell of a lot more sense than a fat old man that breaks into people's houses at night."
