Summary: Rodney had argued that seven-year-old Julianna wasn't old enough

Rodney had argued that seven-year-old Julianna wasn't old enough, wasn't responsible enough, for something so precious. John gave it to her anyway.
As Julianna opened the box, she lifted the delicate necklace out, eyes wide.
"Here, let me put it on you," John offered. She handed it to him, turned and lifted tangled hair so he could fasten the clasp.
She ran to a mirror and touched the pendant gently. "It's beautiful! Thank you!"
John took her on his lap, glad that she allowed it; frequently she did not. He held her close.
"Let me tell you about your grandmother..."
