Prompt: #4 - Babies and puppies
Summary: "But mom, I'll take care of it! Promise!"
Note: For Adventdrabbles on Insane Journal.
P3X-479 had been culled hours before Lorne's team arrived. They had no choice but to bring back the handful of survivors.
"Babies and what are these?" Rodney asked. "They look canine."
"Essentially puppies," the biologists declared. "Or close enough."
Fortunately, Teyla and the other Athosians took in the babies. Most of the puppies were firmly bonded to a baby but there were more canines than humans in the end.
"Don't look at me like that," Rodney warned.
"But…" John protested.
"We're never home," Rodney pointed out.
"But Roo-ood-neey," John whined. "Pul-eezee. I'll take care of it."
"No," Rodney held firm.
John got his puppy. He named her Seren – Welsh for 'star.'
It took two years for her to grow to her full size: huge. But, like all of the puppies, she was extremely intelligent, as well as fiercely loyal.
She learned to go on missions with them. John got her a tac vest.
"Good puppy," Rodney sang absently in a drug-addled voice. Seren had rescued Rodney from an ambush on their last mission, but not before he was hurt.
"Very good puppy," John echoed, clutching Seren's fur and Rodney's hand, one in each hand, with emotions that had no words.
