Summary: For the mcsheplets Challenge #37: Deep as well as for mcsmooch -- A two-fer!
John's late, for a very important date. Just because he didn't know about it isn't an excuse.
Part of the Julianna!verse from Expected. Not originally part of the WIP but it fit nicely.
"You're fucking late," Julianna snarled. "You're in such deep shit."
John had just walked in the door and the thought of "uh-oh, one of those days" was quickly chased by confusion. He looked at the back of the head of his 12 year old daughter sitting on the couch in their quarters working at her laptop. She didn't look around as he stood in the doorway.
"Language," he did manage to get out before he took a deep breath. "What am I late for?"
"You were supposed to meet Poppa. He's pissed," she reported.
John sighed. As much as they tried, Julianna would never be a 'lady' but he and Rodney had hopes for 'female' at some point. Bringing up a young child around a squadron of Marines who all considered themselves honorary Uncles had pitfalls that they had never foreseen.
"What am I late for?" John asked patiently.
The shrug she gave was eloquent in conveying not knowing as well as not really caring. "Just passing the message," she answered flatly. "Check your calendar sometimes, will you? I'm not your damned secretary."
Deciding now was not the time to fight with this mysterious person who was supposed to be his daughter, John went for simple, "Thank you for the message. I will check."
There was a note in his calendar that he didn't remember seeing earlier in the day. Muttering, "Getting too old for this," he brought up the details and, fuck, he was late. He was supposed to be meeting Rodney for dinner.....
A sketchy shower, a quick change of clothes and he was again in the doorway of the living room. "I'm going. Do you need anything?" he asked.
"Oh, no, I'm fine." John didn't have to see the eye-roll.
"I won't go if ..." John offered. He hadn't really spent much time with her lately, either, and was feeling guilty about leaving her to meet with Rodney. "You could probably come if you want."
She sighed and finally turned to look at him. Rodney's eyes looked back at him as she said more reasonably, "No, I get it. It's okay. You and Poppa haven't had much time together lately. Go."
He reached out a hand to tousle the wild, dark hair but stopped when she turned her back to him. "Go. I'll be fine. Teyla asked me to stop by and I'll be there for most of the evening."
"Okay," John answered. "Call if you need anything."
A shrug and a grunt as she went back to what she was doing on the computer.
John had to hustle to not be too late for his dinner with Rodney. Between a recent spate of off-world missions and Rodney's work in the lab, they hadn't really seen each other for more than a few minutes at a time. Rodney must have scheduled dinner as a way to guarantee some quiet time together.
Entering the room indicated on his calendar, John automatically said, "Sorry, I'm....." He stopped when he found himself in an empty room. He stood near the door, turning to see if there was anything he was missing.
As he was about to use his comm, Rodney barreled in, "Sorry. Sorry. If you're going to schedule things, I need more notice than this. Not that I'm complaining but I was in the middle of a sensitive experiment that I had to leave...." He trailed off as he saw John watching him. "What?"
"I didn't schedule anything," John replied carefully. "I thought you did."
"I didn't schedule anything," Rodney echoed. "If I didn't do it and you didn't do it, then who did?"
The lights dimmed in the room and an image of the control chair appeared against the far wall. Above it, a three-dimensional representation of Earth's solar system appeared, the planets rotating around the sun.
"Rodney, what's the date?" John asked with a sudden suspicion.
Rodney hesitated, "Ummm.... Atlantis or Earth date? Why? What are you thinking?"
A door on the far side of the room clicked open, a welcoming, gentle light flowed through the opening.
"Come on," John suggested. "I think we'll find our answer there." John put a hand on the small of Rodney's back to guide him into the next room. Just being able to touch was a luxury he hadn't enjoyed lately.
They stood in the door for a moment looking around the room. A table with two chairs was on one side of the room and a large, oversized bed on the other. Covered dishes were on a small cart and something smelled delicious.
"John?" Rodney asked with suspicion in his voice.
"Think about where we are in the solar system," John quoted softly. Rodney looked at him, wide eyed. John could see Rodney remembering that fateful first meeting. "Fifteen years ago, today, if I'm not mistaken," John went on.
"An anniversary. But, who would have..." Rodney's voice trailed off as he came to the same conclusion John had.
John laughed, "Minx." He touched his communicator, "Lia? You there?"
A giggle, "No one's home."
Rodney chimed in, "How? No. I don't think I want to know."
"Teyla helped," Julianna offered cheerfully. "I'm spending the night there. Neither of you have any appointments until mid-morning and there's enough food to cover breakfast."
Rodney rubbed his forehead. "I don't want to think about what either of them were thinking," he muttered.
John sympathized as he also didn't want to think about their young daughter helping to make arrangements so they could have some long overdue time alone and setting the room up for dinner and some after dinner sex.
"Thank you," John answered softly. "Tell Teyla thanks, too."
"Night," she replied as she clicked off the communicator.
"She's your daughter," John put in, "she hacked both our calendars."
John used the hand at Rodney's back to swing him around so they were face to face. Rodney's hand settled familiarly on John's hip and they simultaneously leaned in for a long, slow kiss.
"Hey," John whispered when they broke for air.
"Hey, yourself," Rodney replied, leaning back in for another kiss. He plastered his body against John's and the kiss quickly became deeper, more intimate.
It's been too long, thought John.
"Bed," Rodney demanded.
"Dinner?" John had to ask.
"Not that I'm thinking too hard about it," Rodney grimaced, "but I suspect they planned things so you could have your wicked way with me first." He let go of John to start taking his clothes off.
The sight of more and more pale skin was too much and John was just as eagerly taking off his own clothes before crawling on the bed to lie next to Rodney. He groaned at the feel of warm skin against his, warm hands pulling them closer together.
After, John dropped a kiss on the top of Rodney's head as they settled in for some sleep. "She's going to be insufferable, you know," John murmured.
"Any more than usual?" Rodney snorted into John's chest.
"Hmmm.... Probably not," John answered.
Rodney moved up for another kiss. This was again slow, familiar and new, both at the same time. A promise for the future and an appreciation of all they have together.
"Sleep," John whispered against Rodney's lips.
"Mmmmm...." Rodney hummed agreement and snuggled in.
They'd have to do something special with Lia, John thought hazily.... he's think more about it tomorrow.....
