Friend of mine asked about writing prompts. She's trying to get back into the writing habit and is looking for some ideas. Writers can always use a muse, and since I immediately had like a billion thoughts, it was easier to put them here and share with whomever is interested.
Unless specifically mentioned, most of the communities listed are on Dreamwidth. I'll specifically identify any that are only on Live Journal or somewhere else.
Also, read the community information. Different comms have different rules they want you to follow for posting, story length, deadlines, etc.
comment_fic is only on Live Journal (that I know of) but has daily prompts that sometimes are fandom specific and sometimes not. But they also have a huge back catalog of prompts that one can look through.
Suggested by others, Tumblr has (at least) a couple of general prompt communities:
--Writing Prompts - https://writing-prompt-s.tumblr.com
--Daily prompts - https://daily-prompts.tumblr.com
story_works does monthly-ish prompts that are multi-fandom.
whatif_au also does monthly-ish prompts that are also multi-fandom.
fandomcalendar is a pimping community for fests in multiple fandoms. It's a source of information about fests of different types in different fandoms. Worth joining.
If you want to tackle something bigger,
genprompt_bingo may be something to look at. You don't have to go for a coverall, but maybe a line or two will generate some ideas. They have some interesting prompts to work with.
Keep an eye out for
trope_bingo. They recently finished a round and I'm hoping they'll start a new round soon-ish. You usually get 4-ish months to work on your bingo card before they have an amnesty. Then they start again.
fandomweekly does a weekly writing challenge.
fan_flashworks makes new prompts on the
10th, 20th and 30th 1st, 10th and 20th (thanks for the correction!) of every month.
Most fandoms also have some prompting communities out there. I know my friend is in Stargate, so a couple of SG specific ideas.
sga_saturday has a new prompt the first Saturday of the month. It's open to any SGA stories.
For the McShep fans, I like to go back and peruse
mcsheplets (only on LJ) when I'm writing SGA stories. There are no new prompts coming out but there are a couple hundred prompts you can use for your own writing. All of the prompts are in the tags for the community.
I'm going to quit there... That is hopefully enough to get anyone started! If anyone has anything they want to suggest, please feel free to leave a comment.
